POISED FOR GROWTH
With easy access to the Cities of Boston, Worcester and Providence as well as business opportunities along the Route 495 corridor, the Town of Millbury is poised for growth. Millbury is a business-friendly community that boasts excellent highway access (direct access to I-90, I-146, Rte. 122, and Rte. 122A and close proximity to Rtes. 495, 290 and 395), an active freight rail line, developable commercial and industrial land, capacity in its sewer and water systems, and a streamlined permitting process aimed at helping applicants navigate the approval process in a timely and cost-effective manner. The Town also has a low, single tax rate and is part of the Blackstone Valley Economic Target Area (ETA), which offers a wide range of State incentives to beneficial businesses.
In 2014, the Town joined forces with the neighboring Town of Sutton to establish a Priority Development Site in accordance with the provisions of M.G.L. Chapter 43D. Combined, this area contains 563 acres of prime real estate that can accommodate industrial, commercial and high density residential development. Millbury’s May 6, 2014 Town Meeting accepted the provisions of Chapter 43D and approved the filing with the Interagency Permitting Board. The Commonwealth’s Interagency Permitting Board approved the expedited permitting application and designated the Route 122A Priority Development Site (PDS), straddling the Towns of Millbury and Sutton, at their meeting September 17, 2014. VIBRANT ECONOMY – PAST & PRESENT
The Blackstone River rushes through Millbury’s town center, also known as Armory Village. A prevalence of mill buildings along its banks bear witness to the important role that the Blackstone River played, not only in Millbury’s historic development, but also in the launch of the American Industrial Revolution. It is because of this rich heritage that Millbury is included in the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor, a national park celebrating the
“Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution”.
Although the armory for which Millbury Center was named is no more, the stately Asa Waters Mansion attests to the success of the enterprise. Today, the Asa Waters Mansion hosts weddings and business meetings, string quartets and wine tastings. Meanwhile, a short walk from the Asa Waters Mansion, the Felters Mill, once a leading producer of pressed wool and synthetic needled felts, is a flourishing mixed-use complex containing a medical clinic, fitness center, professional offices, and small retailers including French Knot, the Cake Shop Cafe, and Christopher’s Homemade Ice Cream Shoppe. In addition to these opportunities, locals and visitors alike can enjoy a day of shopping at Millbury’s various antique, consignment and specialy shops,
including Boring to Adoring Decor & Paint Boutique, fine dining at the trendy Calabria Restaurant, drinks and a movie at the old-time Elm Draught House Cinema, and a tasty treat at
the Candy Shoppe or The Queen’s Cups.
