Members of the Board of Appeals are appointed by the Board of Selectmen, in staggared, 3-year terms. There are 5 members of this board, and 2 alternates who may vote on applications when others are absent or must recuse themselves.
The Board of Appeals is charged with hearing appeals of any town board or officer, in accordance with Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 40A. The Board is also charged with issuing certain special permits (as identified in Section 14 of the Zoning Bylaw) and variances. Finally, the Board of Appeals is the governing body for Comprehensive Permit projects (as defined by state law).
The Board of Appeals meets Wednesdays, once or twice each month depending on the number of applications pending.
